New States Members should be given an apprenticeship

Friday 9th April 2010, 3:00PM BST.

From Michael Tierney.
I WOULD like to applaud the letter written by Roger Bale (JEP, 31 March). His letter was written in words that I wish I could have strung together years ago and sent to the JEP.

However, just to get my two-penn’orth, I feel that the elected candidates should be given a type of apprenticeship and paid accordingly on experience and ability in any field they are appointed to. How can a novice/newcomer be paid the same as one who has been in the job for years and with no idea of what he/she is even going to do in the States?

As they progress in any employment then their pay is reflected. They should also be paid on an attendance/time basis and not on an annual salary as this method is obviously abused. Eg: Senator Syvret who is getting paid and not even working or living in Jersey any more.

Any foolhardy costly decisions should be brought to task and be dealt with severely, perhaps a fine being levied or even job termination and not brushed under the carpet or given a slap on the wrist.

One mess up which comes to mind was the decision not made when to convert the pound to euros for the new incinerator (millions lost). Even the man on the street keeps an eye on the exchange rate before going on holiday to get the best rates. What was the States Treasurer doing?

I will not even touch on the marina monopolies as I am a boat owner and would be biased on the subject but … well said again, Roger.

Mr Tierney, take the trouble to read Sen.Syvrets blog letters 15/16 today(9.4.10) & see the amount of work he has done on behalf of some of his constituents here in Jersey,it adds up to a considerable amount more than other members have ever done for theirs.

SSS is meant to be working in Jersey for all the people of the island.
As it is he seems to be determined to portray himself as a whistle blowing messiah when his own involvement in the whole sorry saga of children’s/social services and health should be investigated.
You probably have forgotten that he was in charge of those departments for quite a few years haven’t you?

No not forgotten as it is too horrific a subject to do that, and who was it that stood up in the States in 1997 & said that things were not being run properly there & called for an investigation into the child services.
Read the blog I dare you then respond with a decent arguement.
Can you nominate a list of members doing work for the whole island that are based here to the degree he is doing please?

    @1 & 3.
I’ve read the blog. All conspiracy theory and outrageous accusations thrown about.

Anyone who dares disagree or who has a different opinion is labelled a child abuser, crook or some other insult.

The very fact that you have called Ade a troll because his opinion is different to yours is a testament to that.

Is it next week that man is sacked. Thank goodness!

I am glad that you haven’t forgotten SSS’s role in this sorry saga but perhaps you didn’t mean it to read that way?
I read the blog which consists of unsubstantiated claims in the nmain and accusing people of horrendous crimes without due processm
Anbd before yoy start suing a man of straw for libel is of no use as you would merely waste your own funds and receive no compensation as this is a civil action not a criminal one

The electorate vote in their politicians – a system commonly refered to as Democracy.

Little tip for you and any other Jersey Beans reading.

When making your decision as to whom to vote for consider:

Their experience, their policies, past successes & failures and overall suitability.
