JERSEY’s Under-14 football team were beaten 3-2 by Clube Desportivo Nacional last night in their opening fixture in a four-team tournament in Madeira.

Playing at the Gaula complex, the home of the Madeiran Football Association, Faser Barlow netted both goals in the Jersey Football Association’s Year-9 Capita Centre of Excellence squad’s defeat.

Centre director Paul Renton was full of praise for his young side despite their loss.

‘Absolutely brilliant,’ he said, shortly after the final whistle. ‘It’s the first time they’ve played together as a team. They kept the ball well, they created some good chances and the quality of their play was as good as our opponents.’
