Keep your dogs muzzled, court orders owner
Saturday 10th April 2010, 2:56PM BST.
A DOG owner has been told that her pets could be destroyed unless she keeps them muzzled and no danger to the public.
In the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday Susan Bell (56) was warned to keep her three Samoyed pets on leads and under control when they are in public areas.
St Brelade Centenier John Trafford described three incidents during the last year in which members of the public made complaints against the animals.
Bell told Relief Magistrate Peter Harris that her dogs – named Troy, Ice and Morgan – ‘loved children’ and that she had kept them on leads since being contacted by Centenier Trafford.

Well, well what a surprise not a Pitbull or Rottweiler in sight, goes to show there are no dangerous dogs just dangerous owners!!!

Can think of thousands of humans over here that should be muzzled, let alone these dogs. Hardly pit bulls are they!

Dog owners whom cannot train their dogs to be off the lead are at fault.A happy dog needs free roaming exercise, training and trust in recall. Perhaps they are simply lazy or just plain ignorant.Just like certain ladies of our local Kennel Club, whom have announced they are planning to encourage a ban on electronic recall and boundary collars. Are those eternally on the lead show dog owners qualified to pass judgement? Those of us that have them, know that they are not cruel.Quite the opposite.

Keep your dog on a lead in built-up places.
and keep your dog under control…..
simplessss

Farmer Trev is right it’s not rocket science, keep your dog on a lead in all built up public areas and don’t let it off lead anywhere unless trained in recall and under your control. My dog is a 3 year old rescue dog, she was never socialised so we are training her at obedience classes. Meantime she is walked on a lead, when on the beach exercising she is on an 8 metre extending lead. This way she can still run and if I run with her she has a degree of freedom.
The only time we ever have a problem is when she is approached by dogs off lead. Despite my obvious attempts to keep these dogs away their owners invariably do nothing letting their dogs approach. Tip to said owners, a dog is on a lead for a reason, if you want your dog to approach ask permission, if it approaches and said approach is clearly not welcome call your dog back.
Lots of lazy dog owners out there who just don’t care, and don’t get me started on the lazy b**tards who don’t clean up their dogs mess. What do they think it doesn’t matter on the beach cos the tide will wash it out? No dim wit, other dog owners will walk on it and tramp it through their houses before noticing, why is the £500 fine not enforced for this disgusting beahviour, it gives the rest of us a bad name.

Yes, there very many arrogant & ignorant dog owners.
I love dogs but don’t own one because my landlord won’t allow it therefore I have cats.
Not long ago a couple would walk there dogs in a huge field outside our house where the cats would play (close to home….they did not roam because they are quite timid).
we politely asked them to walk in the vast open field some way away from our house because we have cats.
They ignored us and subsequently one of their dogs chased our cat to his death in the road.
I don’t blame the dog, that’s his natural instinct….but the owner…..put me in a locked room with them and see who comes out!

Has anyone actually met these dogs? I have met these dogs on a walk and they are charming well behaved dogs which are well cared for by their owner.

I own a Samoyed myself and out of all of my dogs he is by far the most docile. He has a great nature and is brilliant with other animals and people so I was quite shocked when I read this. I could not imagine that my dog would even come close doing anything to be ordered to wear a muzzle! I just hope that people will not change their opinons on this breed, when I walk my dog people stop and smile at him and kids love to come and pet him and he loves the attention.

It’s not clear what the complaints were but if the owner kept the dogs on a lead as soon as she was told to I don’t understand the threat to put the dogs down, more info please.
As a comment on some of the points made above, totally agree it’s usually the owner who is at fault not the dog. There is absolutely no vetting process ( no pun intended ) for dog ownership, consequently some people not capable of caring for dogs are owners. Dogs are intelligent animals and need to be trained, they don’t automatically sit/stay/come etc. They also don’t have the same responses as humans for example when a dog barks if you shout at it the dog thinks you are joining in, you need to know this stuff as a dog owner. Honestly you could conduct an IQ test on some owners walking their dogs and it wouldn’t much matter which end of the lead you attached the equipment to, the result would be the same.
We need better checks in place and enforcement of existing laws, for example the dog mess £500 fine is never enforced yet there is dog mess everywhere, this because of a minority of irresponsible owners.
My dog is never off lead in built up areas, even though she is trained I know that some people are scared of dogs so it’s not fair to them.

“Her pets could be destroyed…”
WHAT?!

**Dog lover – great comment, “Hardly pit bulls are they!”
How retarded a comment is that any dog is dangerous with an irresponsible owner, the dogs may not intend harm but it can still happen and to other dogs there are 3 of them (a pack) and therefore they may become more agressive to protect their owners.

i know quite a few people all over this island that need muzzling and nothing is done about them.
But dogs arent dangerous they are as we say mans best friend and just because they bark and growl doesnt mean there doing any harm.
and saying you’ll destroy the animal if nothings done, well that is just childish and cruel !!!!!!

I have a German shepherd and though she is very pleasant and controlled I keep her on a lead when in public places because people are afraid of them. The problem is other dog owners as mentioned above think because she’s on a lead she is uncontrollable. Times when a loose dog has run towards us, their owner doesn’t call them back and then generally shouts abuse about dog obedience.

This article is woefully inadequate in providing information. What did the dogs supposedly do to begin with? Most Samoyeds absolutely LOVE kids (they were bred that way) and so get very excited around children. I can’t help wondering if this could be a case of overprotective parents seeing a threat that doesn’t exist. But it’s hard to know from the little info in the article. A terrible job of reporting! Facts, please!

Deputy Dawg #3
“electronic recall and boundary collars”.
Are you talking about the ones that emit a loud noise or lemon squirt etc or the ones that deliver an electric shock.
The former, no problem, the latter should only be used as a last resort when the owner has conceded they are useless dog handlers and are too selfish to let the dog go to someone more caring and able.

The Samoyed is a well known status dog and bred specifically for bear baiting. Drug gangs usually employ them to invoke fear in rivals. Often also used by security firms for their strength, agility and fierce agression.
None of the above is true of course but hey, isn’t it great to give a dog a bad name.
In truth, all dogs bite but most however won’t.

Whilst we are having a go at dogs, I think there should be huge fines for the owners who are too lazy to pick up their dogs mess. I remember 20 years ago, there used to be poop on almost every street corner, but now, there is such an improvement it is fantastic. Congratulations to all the owners who have a high regard for everyone else who uses a beach/footbapth/pavement, and pick up after their pooch has done their business. As for the lazy owners who don’t, a big fine should defiantely be in place.

A dog is a dog and will act like a dog at times and if I came running towards a complete stranger I bet I would give them a fright no matter “I just want to play” and they would act accordingly and I might suffer a punch on the nose. Dogs act no differently to the same situation. You have pro active breeds as well as reactive breeds
Dogs are predatory animals and most have being encouraged to exhibit predatory chase behaviour that can spill over to predatory drift. Bad breeding and breeding for money is a high percentage of the problem as well as people not re-searching their chosen breed other than for looks and availability. Wouldn’t give half the dog owners in Jersey a licence for a gun let alone a dog.
I could go on…….or maybe I have but what really gets my goat on this reporting is that any little toerag can get plastered on a Saturday night and smash or steal what they want and terroise the local neighbourhood, but their names, ages or descriptions would not be published so not to offend the little darlings or break their human rights. The way this lady and her dogs were treated by the JEP reporting is wrong and is generalising in the recent trend of lets do some dog bashing. The Centenier needs to talk to a dog behaviourist as well
Report abuse
I don’t blame a dog if it behaves badly because they’re animals, yes they can be trained, but you cannot train a dog for every eventually, and (as you are not a dog yourself) you cannot know 100% what might set a dog off.
You can know a lot about your dog, but you can’t be 100% sure that your dog will never attack someone, if your dog feels suitably threatened it will. By all means enjoy your dog but for goodness sake remember that it is a dog (an animal), especially when it is around kids, kids may not understand that they are provoking or threatening a dog but the dog’s owner should.
All the dogs that have maimed or killed children they were close to were owned by people who assumed their dog was totally docile and would never do such a thing.
