Paul Weller is indeed a heavyweight of the music industry

From Alistair Mitchell.
IF the JEP wishes to portray itself as a credible face in the world of journalism then perhaps it should ensure that its contributors do their homework and offer readers some authoritative comment.
I refer to an article by Lucy Mason (JEP, 7 April) on this year’s Jersey Live. To start an article with a comment like ‘Paul who’ and then continue with ‘some band called The Jam’, reflects a level of ignorance in contemporary music that would best be left aside in preference of a writer who could contribute with some knowledge of the subject.
I will not patronise music lovers here by stating Paul Weller’s standing within the business, but I can assure Miss Mason that he is indeed one of the industry’s heavyweights. He is one of the most respected musicians on the scene who continues to create challenging music that has continually evolved over the decades. He has influenced many young bands and musicians as he himself was influenced by the generation of musicians before him.
I look on his addition to the Jersey Live billing as an ambitious move by the promoter to move the festival forward from where it currently stands and start to introduce an audience to the festival who may not have bothered to turn up in the past.
But I do not see Weller’s inclusion as a reason for younger folk or existing festival goers to stay away. On the contrary, I feel Miss Mason underestimates our young people and their knowledge and appreciation of different styles of music. There are indeed many young Jersey bands which have been influenced in a positive way by The Modfather.
Paul Weller is a wonderful addition to this year’s festival. But please get a music writer to add intelligent comment in your paper next time around and not to insult readers with banal and trivial throwaway lines.

But to be fair he is yesterdays’ man. Sure, loved by 40somethings the world over – but largely unknown to teens and the 20somethings who will make up the majority of the audience at this festival.

I couldn’t agree more with the above letter. I stopped reading the article as it was plain obvious Miss Mason did not have a clue about the subject she was writing about. Best stick to reporting on Cheryl Cole or Steps me thinks!
The way that article was written would be akin to, ‘yeah there was once this guy called Elvis something-or-other and I think he was quite famous once’
On a positive note. Can’t wait to see Paul Weller at Jersey Live. About time we had a proper musician come over. Well done the Warrens!

Totally agree…..I am no “40 something” but I know who The Jam are…….quality band in their time and the music would not be out of place today.
I used to be in the Bruce Foxton fanclub and The Jam used to frequent Jersey often…staying in Hotel de la Plage near Havre Des Pas.
It’s just a shame that all 3 of them couldn’t appear and play some of the “old” tunes…..I bet the youngsters would soon change their minds about the quality of their music.

I forgot to mention….Bruce Foxton used to actually write to me personally and share his experience of staying in Jersey.
I just wish I kept all the letters!

That JEP article was one of the most ludicrous things I have ever read. Nice letter here; well said that man.

Thankfully not all children are clones only listening to what Cowell allows, those that love music will likely have heard of Weller. And the author of the article should certainly know the subject on which she writes.
I’m not particularly a fan of Weller but I can still see his contribution to music, as can my friends (mostly in their 20s). But then we know about music and actively search for it. Weller is not just for the 40+ and young musicians should be able to (and have the opportunity to) appreciate his work (even if it isn’t to their taste). My “well done” also to the Warrens

You must admit though that it is a bit sad that Paul Weller is now having to gig at non-entity festivals in the back of beyond.

I have to say I agree with Miss Mason’s article, fair point to the above contributors that 20 yr olds as well as 40 yr olds have heard of Paul Weller. Great, but it has to be admitted they are in the minority. The sort of people who regularly go to Jersey Live are the sort of people who would appreciate headline acts such as she stated Scouting for Girls and Beyonce – chart music that is popular today. If Paul Weller is coming to JL, why not have him second the the headline act and then hve soemthing current and exciting to headline??!!
