THE Bailiff and Chief Minister have sent messages of support to the people of Poland in the wake of this weekend’s air crash, which claimed the lives of 96 people, including the country’s president.

Flags across the Island will fly at half-mast today to mark the death of President Lech Kaczynski, who died alongside his wife and a number of other senior Polish figures on Saturday.

The Bailiff, Michael Birt, has also sent a letter to the Polish ambassador in London in which he comments on the ‘personal sense of shock’ for Jersey’s sizeable Polish community and the Island as a whole.

A special mass for the victims will be held at St Thomas’ Church at 7.30 pm tomorrow.

A terrible disaster for the people of Poland. That it should happen at a time of improving Russian/Polish relations and en route to a visit to commemorate one of the most darkest periods of Soviet brutality against the Polish people makes it even more tragic.
