Sorry, Helier, but they won’t pay tax
Monday 12th April 2010, 3:00PM BST.
From Julius Olsen.
FOLLOWING my recent letter expressing my views on another supermarket being permitted to open in Jersey and stating that any overseas company not registered in Jersey would not be subject to Jersey income tax, I was quite severely berated by Helier Clement; he fully supported another supermarket, and scoffed at the thought that, to quote, ‘The boy Ozouf would never allow a company to operate here without paying Jersey tax’.
I have thoroughly checked the latter point, and I was correct; any overseas company trading here, such as Tesco or the French Carrefour and not registered in Jersey is subject to zero taxation.
This is totally unfair to all local businesses; I am unsure how many companies trading here are not registered in the Island, but those involved in take-overs of local business could be operating without being taxed.
I am sure that if this was amended, it would make a hefty contribution to our Island’s coffers, and Helier may now apologise.

I totally agree with helier.
We do need another operator for choice and prices.
I have just come back from Uk and brought many items back that we can no longer get in Jersey.
As for paying Jersey tax, neither of the other two pay any either,so whats stopping them getting another in?
We are taken for a ride here as Uk prices for the same items are very much cheaper than ours.

…Double edge sword.
We all want cheaper goods and services but at what cost are we all willing to pay?
Jersey is an small island.

As a Co-op shareholder if Tesco does move here I propose we shut up shop, develop all our stores and property into flats and distribute the profits. A lot of other business will probably follow suit.
End result – more unemployment, less choice and even higher prices as whoever moves here takes advantage of having little or no competition..
