TEN care workers have lost their jobs and 11 elderly residents were given just a fortnight to find somewhere to live after the manager of their care home announced that it was closing.

Field House residential care home houses residents between 70 and 99 years old and for the last four years has been under the management of Michael Durance.

He informed staff and residents on 14 April by letter that the home, in Route du Sud, St Brelade, would be closed by this Friday, giving them just over two weeks’ notice.

In the letter, Mr Durance explained that he had to close because he could not make home alterations required to comply with new legislation. He said that under the Health and Social Services (Regulation of Care Law 2010), the home could not continue to operate.

I was under the impression that care homes did quite well when seeing what they charge their residents’ on a weekly basis, perhaps i’m wrong and these people are in it for the love of the elderly!!!!

Is it reasonable to assume that people have spent many last years there without harm coming to them…? seems as though rulemakers who do not have to turn a profit have been at it again….we lost many guest houses when some Jobsworths decided they were not up to snuff many owners could not justify the expense required of them…and as a consequence lost reasonably priced bed spaces, those who had upgraded priced themselves out of the bucket and spade brigade tourists…Oh how we would love to have that spend going on again right now…and the irony is we the public pay out of our taxes for these jobsworths to sabotage us as they draw fat wages and index linked pensions…we must be mad and they must be laughing

So sad to here the news and sounds like the usual Dr.Geller bureaucracy gone mad !.Mr.Durance is an excellent nurse and manager and must be feeling desperate about this.

There is nothing wrong with trying to raise the standards in Care-homes but I do think that it should be a gradual process and that too many rules are being imposed at once. If this is a happy functional care-home then what a shame that it has to close and what a shame for the residents and care-workers its ridiculous!

I agree this is sad considering we are always being told we will need more care homes for the future and looking at the photo this is a real type of home from home and not some new medical build complex that can’t feel like a home to many.Such a nice looking property with gardens that would make the elderly feel like they were at home.

It is very sad to displace the elderly in such a way, especially as it would appear that the property owner was/is interested only in sizable profit.

Does it mean that the “Health and Social Services (Regulation of Care Law 2010)”, are going to -check- how and where the 11 elderly are going to be…. I would like to see a research on how all the eldery who had to leave care homes like this are living now. Do this people who regulate and close houses go back to the eldery in 6 months and 1 year time and see how they are living and how they are feeling?
I would sugest that people involved in the care of this people whould contact the eldery in 3 months, 6 months and 1 year, and please, please report the outcomes to authority and the public (either the results are positive or negative)
    Regards

14 days for these elderly residents an their families to find them a new home – that is callous!!!

Saying that landlords only have to give non qualified residents 24 hours notice. It is these injustices that our Senators should be correcting – rather than the nonsense most of them seem to focus on.

This home cannot have closed because of the Health and Social Services Regulation of Care Law 2010 as there is no such law.

i think people commenting on here saying the way the residents were treated is callous should really know what they are talking about first!! The manager Mr Durance would not have made the decision lightly! Maybe you should walk a week in his shoes and see how hard it is, especially with all the regulations you have to keep up with and some residential homes are not a licence to print money either its the bigger ones that wring out your wallet at the door believe me and without the care and compassion that i am sure the residents got at this care home. People are quick to judge (#9), this was a small care home with a homely enviroment that i would say everyone who worked there strived for and would not have wanted this to happen unless it was a last resort.

Such a shame this home is closing, my father-in-law was at Field for a few years before he sadly passed away and had nothing but fantastic care from Mike and his staff. Wish Mike and his staff success in finding employment and hope that the residents are placed somewhere where the staff are as kind.

Glad to hear that the home didn’t take the decision to only give residents 14 days to find a new place to live lightly. Still did it of course – just didn’t take it lightly , fair enough. Well done.
