Threat to our history

Wednesday 28th April 2010, 2:58PM BST.

From David Gainsborough Roberts.
HOW upset I was to hear of the partial closing of the Jersey and Maritime Museums.
For any city to lose its history is a terrible blow and I hope these new closures will only be temporary.

So I say to everyone come and support our great heritage. For the price of a ticket you can see Edmund Blampied, Claude Cahun and Marilyn Monroe and that has got to be value for money.

The money wasn’t in abundance but there was enough when the States had control over the castles etc; Heritage got hold of it and now the finances are in a mess. Looking at what they have been doing in making holiday homes and the work on Mont Orgueil while it is all nice well and good they couldn’t aford it clearly because they are now taking away the very heritage access to the Islands children with this closing in the winter and in the case of Hampton closed final. My family have used the Heritage so much in the whole year round I will no longer be buying a membership as there won’t be anything to visit.Put it back in the hands of the states.

David Gainsborough Roberts is giving us his true heartfelt genuine opinion and should be proud.

The Heritage Trust ( not Jersey Heritage which belongs to islanders ) sadly again has not given the whole picture. There Chief executive has put his hand out for an increase of approx. £485,000.

This will cure Heritages under financing. Not a chance, according to a report that you can access.

Go to Google, type in Jersey Heritage, on their website click your mouse on the heading about us, and read the report one of only two after their yearly accounts.

It is just so easy to read, even if you are not good at maths like myself. A story for Christine Herbert, Political writer Ben Que’ree’ or Rob Shipley who is good with in depth reporting,if I may suggest to the editor.

There is ample fact and advice about the real state of Heritage affairs, who are minded to operate not as a business, do not pay tax as a charity, but compete with tax paying businesses in the private sector.

The Management have already run up an unsecured overdraft of £900,000, which the report author fails to see how this sum can be repaid as the whole show is running at a loss.

More money to Heritage Trust or money for nurses, and the needy ?

The only threat to our history is allowing such poorly managed, dreary and unimaginative exhibits/museums to be the ‘voice’ of our heritage. No wonder they can’t pay for themselves – their too boring.
