Guthrie’s starring role
Thursday 29th April 2010, 2:58PM BST.
ISLAND netball favourite Serena Guthrie played a starring role as England successfully defended their Netball Europe Open title on Sunday.
On Friday she started as centre as England beat Wales 54-48 in a tough opening match in Cardiff. The reigning champions got off to a bright start and were leading 15-9 after the first quarter and 28-20 by half time.
Moving to wing defence for the third quarter Guthrie helped her side to a good run of early goals but a near-faultless shooting performance from Wales closed the gap to 39-35.
With England reverting to the starting line-up for the final quarter Wales pulled things back to just two goals until a final surge from the visiting side pushed them to safety.
England went on to beat Northern Ireland 64-39 on Saturday and Guthrie was back on court on Sunday for the title-winning match against Scotland 60-30.
