A RETAILER of luxury chocolate is the latest name to be added to the stores that the Sandpiper group will open at Liberty Wharf this year.
Hotel Chocolat is a chain of stores in the UK and overseas and makes its own chocolate and also grows cocoa at a plant in St Lucia. Its co-founder is Angus Thirlwell, whose parents live in Jersey.
Hotel Chocolat will open at the former Island Site late in the summer. There will also be a store in Guernsey which is due to open in July. Nine new staff will be recruited across the two islands.

I wonder how many luxury chocolate shops the island can stand; we have Leonidas in the Central Market plus Thorntons and La Mare in King Street.
All of them sell high quality chocolate and they are more convenient than Liberty Wharf for me.
But the favourite treat for the chocoholic in my life is a bar of Dairy Milk, she likes posh chocs but the creamy sweetness presses the comfort food button.

Why don’t they just rename Liberty Wharf, Sandpiper Slaughterhouse. They seem to be the only tenants

Give SandpiperCI a break, will you? For your information, without SandpiperCI taking on the leases for the units, the former slaughter house would be empty – no one apart from SandpiperCI have expressed interest.
But, because they have, jobs have been created and more choice is being brought to the island.
How can that possibly be a bad thing?

It is a bit crazy though.
One tenant taking a on a small part of the units and no other tenants for the rest.
How long will it last?
It seems as mad to me the retail units on the top floor of the airport!

I hardly think more choice in luxury chocolates is ‘needed’ in the island. Obviously Sandpiper has got a good deal on the rent because no other tenants are interested.

I am not saying that more chocolate shops are needed at all – you misread what I said. I am saying that without SandpiperCI, all of the shops would be empty. Yes, they probably have got a good deal – so what? As I said before, anything that creates jobs can’t be a bad thing – whoever creates them. If SandpipeCI opened 16 nex chocolate shops in Liberty Wharf it wouldn’t matter – if no one else wants the units and there is demand – so be it!
