FIVE surviving members of Jersey’s 1958 Empire Games team have been recognised over 50 years on.

Four of the men, who are now in their 70s, attended a special ceremony last week and were each praised for their achievements.

Cyclists Stan Perchard (74), Don Ecobichon (70) – who broke the Empire Games record – Bernard (known as Torty) Hubert (74) and weightlifter Richard McFarlane (75) competed for Jersey in the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff in 1958.

They received ties as recognition of their efforts from the Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey at a presentation at Highlands College on 20 April. Boxer George Turmel (76), who is not in the picture, will also receive a tie but he was away on the day of the ceremony.
