Mr Whelan, who is planning a complete revamp of the hotel, was worth an estimated £190 million in 2009 – beating Beckham into second place by £75 million.
Islander Nigel Man-sell, the former Formula One world champion whose home overlooks St Brelade’s Bay, is at number eight on the list with a fortune of £50 million, and golfer Ian Woosnam, who has been unsuccessfully trying to sell his home in St Ouen for several years, was ranked at 35 alongside England football star John Terry with £20 million.
According to the Rich List, Mr Mansell’s home is worth £5.8 million. In 2007 he sold Woodbury Park Country Club in Devon for £14 million and owns a £3 million private jet and a £1.3 million yacht.
