Hedley’s Island Guide: Liberation sculpture

Tricky things, statues. They have a habit of stayin’ exactly where you put them ’n not doin’ much else so it’s best to get ’em raht the first tarm rahnd.

Tek thet big bronze thing they got in Liberation Square fer instance; bunch of people changin’ a sheet ah thought at first, when Tod’s mate Jean pointed it aht to me on one of them new pahnd notes thet’s just hit the village.

We’d only just settled into a discussion abaht how it was only fair thet the local chambermaids farnally got a bit of recognition fer all the work they done over the yers when old Tod ’imself pointed aht thet it was actually a statue celebratin’ the Liberation and thet the people crackin’ the sheet were just regular locals from the war what had been occupied by the Nazis.

Meks sense in a funny way, what with the reputation the German hev got fer layin’ their towels down – seems only raht thet we should celebrate their departure with a statue of some Liberals rippin’ it up from it’s place and givin’ it a good shake out. They were yer for four years as well so god knows what state it’d have been in; stiff as bronze ah’d a reckoned!

Ah’ve done a bit of research since on this yer Interweb and it turns aht thet the ‘Towel Crackers’ were cast bah one Philip Jackson beck in 1995. The original desarn hed a bunch of people throwing some doves into the air but this was changed when some bright spark pointed aht thet metal birds hev a habit of fallin’ to the ground when thrown. (Not ta mention the awful mess they’da made on thet towel!)

Anyway, lovely sculpture, narse idea. Must mek a trip in to see it one day!
