Make contact with Google and demand images be withdrawn
Wednesday 5th May 2010, 2:59PM BST.
From Rory Hill.
I WRITE with reference to the recent news of Google’s photography of properties in the Island (JEP, 27 and 28 April).
This activity is part of Google’s wider mission to record and catalogue as much information about the world as possible, to make this available to as many people as possible, and to make as much money as possible therefrom.
The inevitable objections to Google’s invasive activities only slow it down on a few occasions because the company protests that it is not actually operating illegally. This does not mean that what Google is doing with its Street View photography is acceptable or right – rather that most national legislative apparatus simply doesn’t move fast enough to keep up with such novel threats to citizens’ privacy.
Taking detailed photographs of private property without the owner’s permission, and distributing them worldwide, represents not only an affront to privacy but a lucrative addition to Google’s earnings through advertising. Indeed, Google profit from distributing these photographs, while the property owners don’t receive a penny. In the information economy of the 21st century, therefore, money is being made at our expense.
Whether out of concerns for privacy or profiteering, some are turning against Google and its insidious Street View activities and banning the company from its streets – Greece being a high-profile recent example. Jersey, as a self-governing jurisdiction, has the opportunity to do the same.
In the meantime, if any readers are concerned at the prospect of Google taking pictures of their property without permission, and making money out of them, I would strongly encourage them to contact Google and demand the removal of the relevant images.

Oh get over it already! In the giant scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter.
Anyone can fly into the island and drive past and look at our homes – there’s nothing we can do about that.
And, for that matter, what makes you so sure that people haven’t got anything more interesting to do than look at pictures of your road or home.

Are you suggesting that there should be a ban on anyone taking a photograph of a property and posting it on the internet? Or do you just want Google to be stopped? This is a photo taken at one moment in history. What’s the issue? I realise this may make Mr Hill even more concerned but I am trying to find a property to buy in the UK at the moment. Google Earth and Street View are a fantastic resource to save me visiting all the properties that are available. As are systems such as Nethouseprice.com, which gives you Land Registry records of how much houses last sold for, and access to planning permits in Local Authorities that show you any changes made to properties. Now if Mr Hill wants CCTV cameras banned, things that really do spy on you in real time, I’m with him on that. Just think, with a bicycle registration system in place, you could catch cyclists not wearing a helmet on CCTV and get their registration number. I’m sure the honoraries would be up for that.

Like most people, I’m struggling to see what the big deal is.

Do people not have bigger problems to think about. Next time I fly over the island I promise to keep my eyes closed or drop a pound note out the window to cover the cost of looking at your garden! I feel very sorry for those of you who think this is worth worrying about.
