Green lights a bright idea, says minister

ISLANDERS could see red about a green move to take down the colourful lights along St Aubin’s Bay.
Transport Minister Mike Jackson says that new LED lightbulbs are a bright idea to save money.
But it could provoke resistance – the last time that someone suggested removing the coloured bulbs, several Islanders led by former Bailiff Sir Peter Crill complained.
Mr Jackson says that the new low-energy, long-life bulbs would save cash and do a better job of illuminating the cycle track.
The new bulbs are being trialled along a section of the promenade cycle track west of Bel Royal.

Win a share of £10,000
2012 is the year of the London Olympics and to celebrate this great event the Jersey Evening Post, in association with sponsors Ogier is giving all sporting clubs a chance to win a share of £10,000.
Surely you can get coloured LED lightbulbs?
Can this be looked into? It would stop those “several islanders” complaining, after all.

A good idea for incremental replacement and change. But it is not GREEN to ditch thousands of good bulbs.

At last, white lights. The coloured ones have annoyed me for years. White will look much better. Well done on a good decision.

Why not save even more money by not replacing the lights just switch them off.
If hospitality or the chamber of commerce want to sponser them fine let them pay to replace and run.
This type of approach is the one to get the budget deficit down and it needs to be taken accross the board.

Way overdue – it gets my vote…….. for a few extra £££ we could put in multi coloured LEDs and have a nice rainbow effect ….. whatever … bulbs break in the wind – leds don’t…….

Why don’t they just use solar powered lighting??

The lights on the seafront were state of the art gas filled brighter and burn less electricity..we have them they brighten the seafront and are cheerful and very seaside traditional…what on earth is wrong with these people…we own them ,they are paid for ..why waste money on some new hairbrain scheme….if it ain’t broke don’t tinker with it ..This guy Jackson seems to come up with one madcap scheme after another….what’s his problem.

John (4) maybe you are lazy and use your car always but at night the cycle path is very busy with walkers, and also quite a few cyclists.
surely ditching old bulbs is greener even though the waste, each current bulb must be 30 watts id guess where as a comparable LED mite be 5 watts. saving 6 times the power and these lights are on a lot. Changing each bulb as it fuses would be huge amount of work so mite as well change them all at once.

Do you know one thing I find very odd when back in Jersey? It gets DARK at night! Mind you living above London you don’t get much choice. The skyline is permenatley lit! Maybe for once the States has had a good idea. Quality lighting rather than quantity.

you can make just about any colour you wish with a simple piece of LED trickery ( keep an eye on the front of the Opera House )
also, they do tend to be brighter, for a heap less money. I’d never realised the lighting was meant to illuminate the cycle path.
and another thing, there wouldn’t need to be nearly so many of the blighters.

I for one would not like to see the coloured lights go. 2 reasons.
The extra light pollution created by bright LED’s is a major downside and secondly on a sentimental note, the coloured lights have always been there as long as I can remember, and whenever returning to Jersey on the ferry at night, you always knew you were home when you rounded Noirmont and those lights came into view.
Mike Jackson, find a low energy coloured bulb alternative if you must. But answer this. What is the actual cost of keeping the existing lights as against replacing them? Low energy alternatives are not cheap!

Does it really matter what shape the flippin’ lights are?? …As long as it has the same effect, who cares!! they’ll still be there!!! (WOULD LOVE TO SEE THOSE AUTO-CHANGE MULTI-COLOURED LEDs) like they have in computers. That would make the whole front twinkle from the sea!!!
CONCLUSION: Overall good move… now maybe they can lower our taxes & electricity bills!!!! YAY!*

You miss the point about saving money. Cyclists should have lights on their bikes, walkers should have torches.
The States should not be spending our money in this way. You are not going to light up all the green lanes in case some one without a torch or lights on their bike chooses to use it at night.
The greenest solution is just to switch the lights off.
