US honour for a top Jersey student
Monday 24th May 2010, 3:00PM BST.
A JERSEY student has been inducted into his university’s honour society as a result of his outstanding academic achievements.
Piers de Gruchy (23), of St Martin, is studying business administration at Lander University, South Carolina.
The former Victoria College pupil went to the American university as part of a golf scholarship and is expected to graduate later this year.
Last month he was inducted into the Alpha Chi National College Honor Scholarship Society, along with 39 other students, at a ceremony held at his university.
Alpha Chi faculty co-ordinator and Lander University professor Dr John Moore explained that the students were in the top ten per cent of their class.
Piers, the son of Owen and Sue de Gruchy, received a National College Honor Scholarship medallion symbolising his induction.
Lander University president Dr Daniel Ball told the students that being part of the society recognised the ‘really fine academic achievements of our top students’.
Lander’s Alpha Chi chapter was established in 1957 and is one of around 300 chapters in the United States and Puerto Rico.
Nearly 400,000 members have been inducted into the honour society since its beginning in 1922.
In addition to his recent achievement, Piers was accepted into the Beta Gamma Sigma in March, which is the international honour society for business programs. He also won Lander University’s 2009/2010 team academic award for having the highest grade point average among his teammates on Lander’s golf team.
