A MAJOR stretch of coastline, stretching from Grève de Lecq to Grosnez Castle, has come under the control of the public of the Island.

The 165 vergées of land, which encircles the former Pontins holiday camp, represents the largest States acquisition of coastal land since the purchase of Noirmont.

It follows a deal struck with St Mary landowner Carole Louise Hart, who is in her 70s, which saw the States taking on the liability of the Grève de Lecq rock face, formally in Mrs Hart’s ownership.

The transaction was approved by the Royal Court on Friday. The last time the States took control of a large piece of land was the 1950 purchase of Noirmont headland and farm for £8,800.

That is not a gift the states ie the taxpayer now have to pay the costs of maintaining the land and the cliff face. The lady could never have built on it as is is green zone with no building on it, so she has simple passed on the liability of ownership onto the tax payer.

It is good to have the land owned by the whole Island but don’t call it a gift. If you get given a bill to pay for someone it is not a gift for you but for them so she has been given the gift by us the tax payer!

This is the same Richard Falle who took £10 million off the taxpayer for the Les Pas con? Bought a feudal title for £200 in 1987 and then with the help of senior politicians took £10 million off the tax payer. Gift? Yeah thanks!

I am amazed at the negative comments about what is a very generous gift. Why not visit this area and check the real beauty of this stunning piece of Jersey coastline. Safe forever what more can we ask for.
