Racing into town
Tuesday 25th May 2010, 3:00PM BST.
DOUBLE Paralympic Beijing gold medallist Simon Richardson is to race in Jersey this weekend.
Richardson will compete in the second Rubis Town Criterium race on Sunday and is also scheduled to take part in Monday morning’s road race on the Watersplash circuit around St Ouen and St Peter.
Sunday’s spectacular St Helier town centre race has attracted six professional teams including the Wilier Big Maggys.com team which features Jersey Commonwealth Games hopeful Chris Spence, who turned pro last September.
Two professional teams from the Isle of Man will be competing, as will teams from the Swindon Road Club and Guernsey. Team Zappi, headed by former Italian professional Flavio Zappi, features star UK riders with many out to prove that they were good enough to win places in the Olympic development squad after narrowly missing out.
Race organiser Tony Moffa, who is being assisted by Toby Aubert, said: ‘We are delighted with the quality of riders we have and we are looking forward to another excellent weekend following last year’s success with our inaugural race.’
