Fight to the finish

The moment when Team Fox navigator Gideon Du Val was thrown out of his seat and landed on pilot Martin Colligan’s arm, breaking the steering wheel in the process, in round one of the 2010 SuperStock race in Penzance Picture: onEdition
IT was a super-fast, super-impressive start for Jersey’s Team Fox who lie second overall after the first round of the P1 Powerboat SuperStock 150 hp Championship.
Driver Martin Colligan and navigator Gideon Du Val were in top form to take one fourth and two second place finishes from the opening round in Penzance at the weekend.
Reaching break-neck speeds and hurtling around the Cornwall course lived up to expectation but it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Team Fox, in only their second season as powerboat racers, as Colligan explained.
‘It was a great result for us to come out second overall. The first race was eventful as we were in second place but coming around turn five we hit a big bit of swell and the boat took off sideways.
‘Gideon came out of his seat and nearly broke my arm, landing on it and completely breaking the steering wheel. We still managed to restart and finish the race in fourth which was a brilliant recovery. My arm is in a right state now, it’s black and blue, but there was no way I was going to stop.’
