NINE candidates will contest a single Senatorial seat at the by-election in three weeks.

There were 110 people at the Town Hall last night to see the candidates nominated, and to hear the proposers introduce their nominees with short speeches.

The candidates are: Gerard Baudains, Nick Le Cornu, Francis Le Gresley, Philip Maguire, Peter Remon-Whorrall, Gino Risoli, Pat Ryan, Deputy Geoff Southern and Stuart Syvret. Susette Hase, who had announced her intention to stand, has withdrawn.

The candidate who wins the Islandwide poll on Wednesday 16 June will fill the last 18 months of the term until the full Senatorial election in 2011. The by-election has been caused by Mr Syvret’s disqualification from office, after he left the Island for six months, claiming that he was being unfairly treated by the police and Crown Officers.

All nine candidates are expected to embark on a full tour of the Island’s parish halls for hustings meetings, starting tomorrow at St Martin’s Public Hall, and an extra hustings meeting will be held on Saturday morning. Saturday’s meeting has been specially organised for voters aged between 16 and 25 and takes place at the Jersey Arts Centre from 11.30 am to 1.30 pm.
