Euro payment group set up
Thursday 27th May 2010, 3:00PM BST.
JERSEY needs to be part of a Europe-wide system that makes it easier to make and receive payments by euro if it is not going to be placed at a competitive disadvantage.
Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur believes the Island should be part of the Single Euro Payments Area to remain competitive in the provision of financial transaction services.
Senator Le Sueur said: ‘Entry is very necessary from our point of view in terms of protecting the competitiveness of the finance industry.’
The Island has set up a group to consider changes to laws or regulations that may be required to meet the entry criteria.
Its members include representatives from the Chief Minister’s department, the Jersey Financial Services Commission, the Jersey Bankers’ Association, the Law Society and Jersey Finance.
