Hill: Chief Minister should resign over suspension debacle
Friday 28th May 2010, 2:57PM BST.
CHIEF Minister Terry Le Sueur should resign for allowing the £1 million suspension of a senior hospital consultant to go on so long, according to Deputy Bob Hill.
As well as calling for his resignation, the Deputy wants the Senator to apologise to consultant gynaecologist John Day for the stress and injustice caused by his three-year suspension.
Mr Day was suspended following the death of staff nurse Elizabeth Rourke in 2006. Mrs Rourke was on the consultant’s operating list that day. She died following a routine operation carried out by a locum doctor, while Mr Day was out of theatre.
The locum, Dr Dolores Moyano Ontiveros, was acquitted of Mrs Rourke’s manslaughter last year. A review of the management of the suspension released on Tuesday found that it went on too long.
The Deputy said: ‘Health Minister Anne Pryke says that lessons have been learned and we must move forward. That is so wet and wilting from people who ought to know better and they should be finding out who is accountable, because someone must be accountable.’
