JERSEY and Guernsey, who could yet meet, are playing off for positions 97 to 104 out of the 109 nations competing in the World Team Table Tennis Championships in Moscow.
Jersey yesterday lost 3-2 to Jordan and depending how each islands’ results go the Channel Islands teams could yet meet in the championship.
Craig Gascoyne got Jersey off to a flying start against Jordan winning 14-12, 11-9, 11-4 against No 3 Lutfi Jaber.
Josh Band was next up and although he won the second game 13-11 he was defeated 3-1 by No 1 Zaid Abo Yaman, the latter who had some devastating topspin serves.
Luke Walker than played his best match of the tournament against No 2 Rida Sadaqa. Walker won the third and fourth games 11-8, 12-10 to level the scores only for Sadaqa to hit back and win the decider 11-7 to put Jordan 2-1 ahead.
Gascoyne returned to level the match at 2-2 with a fifth-game 14-12 win against Yaman. Gascoyne came from a game down to lead to 2-1 before winning overall to send the match into a deciding match.
Band was up against Jaber and despite a bright start he was beaten 11-8, 11-4, 11-2 by an opponent who hardly missed the table in the second and third games.
Jersey’s next match is against Kosovo in their eight-team section where Guernsey oppose Laos.
