A Scouting family affair
Monday 31st May 2010, 3:00PM BST.
WHEN nine-year-old Charlie Hall was invested into the 1st Jersey St Ouen Cub Pack earlier this month it was very much a family affair.
His dad Nigel had led the very same pack as scout leader in the 1980s and the man presenting him with his scarf and membership badge was also rather familiar.
That man was Charlie’s grandfather, Lieutenant-Colonel Bill Hall, OBE, a former vice-president of the Scout Association and still an active uniformed member of the World Scout Movement at the age of 93.
During his 55 years in scouting, Bill has played a leading role in its development, both in the UK and more recently Eastern Europe.
And it was because of his long and dedicated service that Bill was invited to do the presentation honours at the recent investiture service, which included the youngest of his nine grandchildren, Charlie.
Charlie’s father, Nigel, said that the event was a proud one for all the family.
‘It was special, especially getting a 93-year-old into his full scout uniform,’ he said. ‘It was something quite exceptional and meant an awful lot to my father. Clearly seeing the last of his grandchildren invested means that little bit extra.’
At the event on 17 May, at the group’s headquarters, Bill also presented badges to other members of the pack.
