Island’s population rises to 92,500

Wednesday 2nd June 2010, 2:59PM BST.

JERSEY’S population went up by 600 to stand at 92,500 at the end of 2009.

The increase is divided evenly between natural growth – the rise of births over deaths – and the balance of immigration over people leaving the Island.

Natural growth accounted for around 250 new Islanders in 2009, a figure consistent with the average over the last two decades, but net immigration fell back to 2005 levels to stand at around 300.

The three years before 2009 saw a huge influx of new workers coming to Jersey to live – with an average of almost 900, nearly three times as many new workers, coming to the Island from 2006 to 2008.

Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur said that he was comfortable with the figures, which he said showed the right balance in the Island’s population policy.
