UNEMPLOYED Islanders should try to find voluntary work to help them brush up their skills, according to recruitment consultancy Kendrick Rose.

Jersey’s unemployment statistics show that there have been record numbers of people out of work.
It is National Volunteer Week and on Saturday the first ever ‘Volunteer Speed Dating’ event is being held at St Paul’s Centre between 12 and 2 pm.

Kendrick Rose director Shelley Kendrick said that this was an opportunity to find a charity that would help an unemployed person not only develop new skills but enable them to become involved in providing important community services.

‘Volunteering can be extremely rewarding for both the volunteer and the organisation. Although the work is unpaid, for someone without a job, volunteering provides an excellent opportunity to become involved in a way that enables them to use work skills while helping to build a stronger Island community,’ she said.

Sounds like a perfect oppurtunity for unsrcupulous employers to take advantage of people to me. Maybe a good idea elsewhere but not in Jersey.

while it is a good idea to help out, if having nothing to do, better than going to the pub, or sinking into unemployed depression.
we all need cash for our labours .

Alison, this is to assist charities, work in shops, fundraising, meals on wheels that sort of thing, so unscrupulous employers won’t be involved, where better than jersey where community spirit is so badly needed?

Perhaps those claiming benefits should help contribute back to society by “volunteering”.

Gary, if that is the case then good idea. I can’t help but feel it would soon stretch to the paid employment market and be used and abused though.
Also correct me if I am wrong someone, I was under the impression if you were on benefit you couldn’t even undertake voluntary work?

For example, those on LTIA (Long term Incapacity Allowance) benefits will have a chance to expand and grow. Increasing an array of skills even if Voluntary.
I say good on director Shelley Kendrick! Keep up the good work, I hope it continues.

Voluntary work would be wonderful. There is just one snag: the way that the Regulation of Undertakings rules are written could very easily be used to ensure that it becomes the preserve of the “5yrs-plus residence only” brigade – and that, I contend, is an indefensible iniquity.
