Le Sueur backs Hilton for Housing
Monday 7th June 2010, 2:59PM BST.
WITH a scathing report on the sell-off of States properties apparently looming, a new Housing Minister will be elected tomorrow.
Senator Alan Breckon and Deputies Jackie Hilton and Sean Power are in the running to take over from Senator Terry Le Main, who resigned last week over links to a developer he tried to get cleared of breaking the Housing Law.
Deputy Hilton will be nominated by Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur in the States tomorrow morning, after initially saying that she supported Senator Breckon for the role.
But sources say that it is not going to be a good week for the Housing and Treasury departments, because a highly critical report about the way in which properties have been sold by the States over the last few years is due for release.

Hilton is a great choice to run Housing, Shes a very good public person, She is friendly and looks out for others.
She has also taken it upon herself to fight for what she believes in and on behalf of the people of Jersey.
She would get my vote.

Ministers jobs to Senators with an Island wide mandate

Senator Alan Breckon is the guy who should get the post. He has more experience, would be far more credible and won’t be a sycophant for Terry Le Sueur.
Members of the States would be giving him the thumbs down if they voted against Mr. Le Sueur’s preferred candidate; it would give him an indication how unpopular he is.

Another critical report, more ‘lessons learned’ and in a few weeks time another critical report will arrive to the usual chorus.

may the best person win, both are suitable for the post.

Lets stack them up:-
Terry Le Main: Caught out in a lie, (or at best, a fudging of the truth) consumate arrogance (“if I want to take time out, its nobody’s business but mine”) and some of the worst maintained social housing in the UK. (He can’t say it never happened on his watch, he’s been there for ages)
Alan Breckon: A man who’s social conscience, integrity and leadership has made him one of the most respected politicians on the island. He is, as pointed out in other posts, a Senator with an island wide mandate from the people, to speak for the people.
Lets face it…he doesn’t stand a chance if Terry Le Suer’s prefered candidate has been given “the nod” already. After all, thats the Jersey way.
We don’t get the ministers we want and we don’t get the ministers who can do the job best of all. You only have to look at who the previous Chief Minister was, the current Chief Minister is and the next Chief Minister will be!

Alan Breckon is right for this post…time served, not flash, has island wide mandate…lot’s of experience..and above all is not part of,director, of or beneficiary of,a building firm ..this alone makes him the man for the job.

Surely the very fact Le Sueur goes for Hilton, Breckon must be a shoo in, Walker, Le Sueur, Ouzof, Le Main all a disgrace.

Either Jackie Hilton or Alan Breckon would get my vote. Hilton is a bit establishment but I do think she has integrity and will stand up for what she thinks is right, she also doesn’t come from a typical rich background so I think would understand things from a states tenant’s perspective (without the Geoff Southern their poor therefore must be special mentality)
Alan Breckon similarly has a sound background, but somehow or other comes over as being burnt out, not quite sharp enough.
And as for the other one Sean (psst can I be your political lobbyist) Power, absolutely no way, not now, never.

It is without doubt the most inept and incompetent government Jersey has ever in its long history had the misfortune to have in office. The housing minister holds one of the most powerful positions in the States and as such it should be held by a person of integrity and respect.
It matters not if a person holds an island wide mandate as many of the positions are held by deputies or constables. Many people have commented on the fact of bad reports and the burying of the truth….. And it is a sad reflection of our government over the past 15 years that we have seen property like the JCG site being under valued and subsequently sold for a fraction of its real value.
The Waterfront is a prime example. It was handed over to Les Pas Holdings with a value of 10 Million and planning permission for 100 units of accommodation…. It now has over 300. Money talks.
Rest assured whoever becomes housing minister it will be business as usual and nothing will change. The money making gravy train that is housing…. and its peripherals, is not ready to pull into station any time soon….. So don’t hold your breath and expect any change soon.

I agree completely with #4 Tony. No Constables or Deputies with tiny vote proportions should be ministers.Senators have an island wide mandate. Look when we ended up with the Guy De Faye. Failed in the Senatorial election, gets in with 600ish votes in St Helier, and the whole island had to put up with his arrogance, and incompetence!
I hope Breckon wins. Power and Hilton will be Terry’s lap dogs.

A fine example of the Chief Minister following orders by attempting to stack the deck – business as usual!

That Roy, sums up my feelings entirely. Well said.
