Overpaid and over here

MANY Islanders know of the description ‘overpaid, over sexed and over here’ that was applied to the United States forces who flooded the United Kingdom to take part in the liberation of Europe during World War II.

Perhaps, following your comparison of top civil servants’ salaries that was contained in your article ‘In the big league’ (JEP, 5 Jun), those same Islanders might have the view that, of those sentiments, two out of three might equally apply locally.

For my part, I struggle to understand how the chief executive of the States, or the Waterfront Enterprise Board chief executive for that matter, can enjoy remuneration packages that are broadly equivalent to or better than that of the Chief of the Defence Staff.

Given the latter’s responsibility for the overall strategic military direction and advice provided for the security of the United Kingdom, and the Crown dependencies by the way, the command of some 200,000-plus men and women, many of whom are presently and actively engaged at war, and an annual budget of some £40 billion, it does seem that the equation ‘does not compute’ fits, and that the States remuneration policy is one that treats the income from Jersey taxpayers as mere confetti.
