Half the Island’s hives could be destroyed
Saturday 12th June 2010, 2:58PM BST.
NEARLY half of Jersey’s beehives could have to be destroyed after an American disease was discovered in the Island.
So far, 26 hives have been found to be infected with American Foulbrood, a disease which kills young bees, and five have been destroyed.
All affected hives and equipment must be destroyed to prevent the disease spreading because its spores can survive for up to 100 years.
