Prison staff in smuggling ring?
Tuesday 15th June 2010, 3:00PM BST.
SPECIALIST metal detecting equipment has been brought in at La Moye prison amid fears that corrupt staff could be smuggling in mobile phones for prisoners.
Prison Governor Bill Millar fears that there are so many mobile phones in the prison that he cannot rule out staff bringing them in.
To make matters worse, criminals behind bars have become so adept at hiding the phones that a ‘BOSS chair’, worth thousands of pounds, has been brought in.
Prisoners suspected of concealing the phones internally now have to sit in the chair – a specialist piece of equipment used widely in UK prisons – which detects whether criminals are hiding a foreign body. The prisoner can then hand the phone over or can be put in segregation until the phone is recovered naturally.

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to phone the suspected prisoner up and if his ar*e starts ringing he’s concealing a phone.

Its very bad when the law makers become the law breakers. What is wrong with prisoners using mobile phones anyway, if they didnt have these they couldnt place their orders for their other illegal substances to be brought in could they. give them a break

I think phones are the least of the prison officers problems.
I dont think its a big secret anymore that most drugs you can find on the streets in Jersey are more readily available and cheaper in La Moye.
If you had to choose one, I would let them keep the phones and tighten the noose on people bringing in illeagle substances.
They are in there to rehabilitate after all

I think i’d rather go without a phone thanks.
Sounds painful.

Well i had to look it up but it’s worth reading about the chair:

Oh and Mulvie, the smart prisoner would have set the ring tone to vibrate mode.

Why not just put a mobile phone signal blocker in?
They start at £40, got to be cheaper than this chair!
Not rocket sceince is it.

#6 – PJ. Not rocket science, but strangely illegal here it seems. This has been mentioned before. I understand it’s to do with blocking access to 999 or something along those lines.

Papillon was years ahead of his time. They didn’t have mobile phones on Devil’s Island, but they had worked out where to hide their chargers! (No pun intended with “worked out”).

Surely if the Gov suspects staff then this should be investigated, must say it is a bit of a sweeping statement and I am sure has upset a lot of staff. Surely it can not be that hard to locate these phones in a sterile prison with limited hiding areas. If phones are found on inmates then come down hard. I dread to think what pathetic punishment is passed on to those found with phones.

George, #7 – it doesn’t block landlines, so no problems phoning 999 whilst in prison lol.
If illegal (I can see your point whilst on the outside of the prison gates), then the law is an ass when the prisoners can use a mobile to commit possible further crime as recently published.

oh come on, we all know La Moye is a joke. So much so that those who are in there or previously have been call it La Moye holiday Inn. They have toilets, access to gym, mobile phones, playstations and drugs – and they get to live there rent free!

La Moye is a joke, rehabilitation my back side, it has been long known that it is easier to buy drugs inside La Moye than outside, criminal activity in Jersey stems from inside the prison.

What is going on up there…it is supposed to be a prison..for those who have transgressed…Three square meals a day…central heating, clour t.v. all stations,..game boys etc and Free gymn facilities,,Free dental requirements, free medical.I know dealers and user who are happy with a sort stint inside to get “Straight”Oh yes did I mention Free detox…hey the taxpayer foots the bill..so these streetwise cowboys come out fit and in great shape ripped and ready to hit the town again…we pay..and we can’t even keep booze, drugs and phones out of their hands..they are supposed to be in….PRISON.it would be cheaper to let them offend and do nothing. We need to get a grip, take charge and let Prison mean Prison..if the staff can’t do it .get rid and get in someone who can and bin all this P.C. B/S.time to get tough.

There’s another cost cutting exercise there……bread, water and basic facilities instead of the top notch room service and personal luxuries they currently receive.
No wonder it was recently reported that it costs approx £53k per annum to keep one prisoner…..that’s more than most law abiding citizens earn.
It would seem CRIME DOES PAY!!!
Maybe we should ALL commit a crime and get sent to prison for a nice rest??

Time to get someone tough in there and make prison what it should be TOUGH so you don’t want to go back. And is that really true, free dental and health care while you are there. If it really is £53000 pa to keep one prisoner, they may as well just send them to a luxury hotel next to a beach, that would work out cheaper.
