A BBC journalist who was shot by al-Qaeda while filming in Saudi Arabia six years ago is to be the guest speaker at a dinner in Jersey later this year.

Frank Gardner will speak at the annual dinner of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, which is to be held at the Hotel de France on 1 October.

In 2004 he was shot in an attack by gunmen in Riyadh. His cameraman was killed but Mr Gardner survived, but with major spinal-cord injuries.

He returned to his job at the BBC following 14 operations and in 2005 was made an OBE for services to journalism.

He is now the UK’s first full-time security correspondent, reporting for the BBC on both domestic and international security matters. He has also managed to resume sporting activities, including scuba diving and even skiing with the aid of a ‘ski chair’.
