POLLS close in under an hour in today’s Senatorial by-election and, unless there is a late surge, a disappointly low turnout is expected.

It has been a long day for those supervising the election, which was called following Stuart Syvret’s departure from the States because he had been absent from the Island for six months.

He chose to put himself foward to regain his seat, however, and is one of the nine candidates who have faced the electorate at 12 public meetings over the last fortnight. The winner will take up the post for the last 18 months remaining on the Senatorial seat before general elections next year.

Voting began at 8 am and will end at 8 pm, with the final result expected to be declared by around 10.30 pm.

There are no women among the candidates who are Gerard Baudains, Nick Le Cornu, Francis Le Gresley, Philip Maguire, Peter Remon-Whorrall, Gino Risoli, Pat Ryan, Deputy Geoff Southern and Stuart Syvret.

• Check here for the result later tonight and find out what the successful candidate has to say in Thursday’s Jersey Evening Post.

It’s not surprising that the voter turnout is likely to be even worse than normal. This will be because of the utter hatchet job the JEP has done on this election.
In past elections each hustings would get a full report and added to that there is would normally be an article on each candidate standing for election to inform the public of their “manifesto” or at least their stance on issues of current interest.
Not this time though – only a few of the hustings were covered, and poorly reported on at that, and no individual article for the candidates.
Was this because the JEP – notoriously anti-Syvret, were so busy bigging up Geoff Southern, or were they just worried that if Stuart was allowed any publicity other than their few negative and biased comments that he might prove to the public that he actually is just what Jersey needs to get us out of the corruption filled mess that we are currently in?

I spoke to several peope today and asked if they were going to vote and without fail their answers were along the lines of “vote for what”, “is that today” and “I don’t even know who is standing”. A really well publicised election then!!

Well done JEP! In an island where apathy commonly rules anyway, we really could have done without your extra “help” here!

Diane – there was an individual pullout on each of the candidates – on Monday I think.

My family all sat down and read the manifestos of each of the candidates we were considering and then made our decisions.

It’s slow going deducing who is really who on here, but I am now satisfied that God’s Mentor is not Mick.

Still trawling for typos I see.

Have you ever thought about flower arranging. I am sure you would find it very exiting. I am sure it would be much more so than crawling under your car to see if a magnet would stick to your brake lines so you could massage your ego by announcing someone mistaken.
Only problem is flower arranging requires a bit of imagination and you seem to crave order.

S%d flower arranging as a hobby when typo trawling is handed to me on a plate by a protagonist who mistypes his own forum name!!!!

The evidence is in the Gravatar, but by all means come up with a plausible explanation.

By the way, I don’t generally worry too much about typos, unless they are particularly amusing, only malapropisms and incorrect Latin plurals.

I also enjoy learning, so the information about the brake pipes was of great benefit, thank you.
