Motor trade giving fair deal to consumers, says JCRA
Thursday 17th June 2010, 2:56PM BST.
ISLANDERS are not being ripped off when it comes to buying a new car despite one dealership dominating the market, a report has found.
The review by the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority found that one dealership – the Jacksons and Motor Mall group – was supplying half of all new cars in the Island.
But, it said, there was no evidence of any dealership abusing their position within the market and the industry was largely working as it should.
It also said that while new cars were more expensive than in the UK, this could be explained by the higher delivery charges and running costs for local dealerships.

“It also said that while new cars were more expensive than in the UK, this could be explained by the higher delivery charges and running costs for local dealerships”.
That’s one explanation, another is that local dealers are greedy given that cars are 17.5% cheaper for them to purchase as no VAT is payable.
I’d never buy a new car you lose too much on depreciation but if I did I would certainly buy from either the UK or another European destination, I can buy cars cheaper from the UK than I can 2nd hand here.

So why are cars up to £3k more expensive than the uk even for used clapped out old bangers?

“while new cars were more expensive than in the UK” – sorry have I missed the point! cars in Jersey should be CHEAPER, who paid for the JCRA report. How stupid do you really think people are here, that you can put out a report that states we are not being ripped off. There you go Tez save yourself some money get rid of this biased group, who obviously misguidedly believe Jersey offers value for money. Oh, as an afterthought just ordered bedroom furniture from UK, ten days delivery, saving vat content and £247 cost difference, why buy anything locally ! ! !

Compare the used car prices regularly advertised by the dealer mentioned above with those of a UK dealer and then judge whether the JCRA is takling nonsense!!

Oh! That’s ok then! There was silly me thinking that we were getting ripped off, but in actual fact it’s simply down to the old freight costs and higher rental and staff costs locally.
Thanks for clearing that up. However, we the consumer are still getting ripped off – albeit not so much by the actual retailer but rather by the fact that everything is more expensive here thanks to the exorbitant import charges. The whole island is just a rip-off, we pay premium prices for a very basic quality and service, and in typical Jersey fashion it’s all about the short-term profit without any consideration for the future.
However, whatever the reasoning, if I ever did decide to buy a new car, I’d still be sure to purchase it from the UK rather than ‘think twice buy local’ and throwing my money down the drain. I echo the sentiments of comment 3, “why buy anthing locally!”

Its a shame the local sheep are so obssessed with there German cars. There extremely “common” and particulaly popular with the “wrong type” of people including those who still live in the 80,s.
“Yes” Gene hunt drove an Audi in the 80,s when they were fashionable. As for Porsches,Bmws and Mercedes just check out there reliability on the J.D power survey to see how rubbish they are.
Im an “estate agent” with a Bmw convertible.
Does that make you sucessfull or common?
If things continue as they are,the estate agents should trade up to something with a seven year warrenty, but then there estate agents after all.

The Island is run by the rich for the rich. End of.

Thats a joke. I looked at a small hatchback last January. It was being sold for exactly the same price as the UK retail price £6,995 which includes VAT(and it was not on special offer on the UK). I asked for a breakdown of the price and the delivery charges were exactly the difference between VAT that would have been chaged in the UK and GST.- I thought it was only department stores that added the equivalent of VAT to their prices.
I also noticed that the car had been pre-registerd the previous year (December), but was being marketed as new.
Anyone who buys a new car or used car from a main dealer in Jersey is crazy!

Perhaps one should not laugh at the afflicted, but I do so enjoy having a chuckle when people are so quick to be judgmental of others, yet cannot even get their basic grammar correct.
Such as comment 6, for example. It was almost painful trying to decipher the incorrect use of “there” several times lol

It’s not just new cars either, the Honda dealership are selling a 2002 Honda Jazz for £6500, Autoquake UK are selling a 2006 car for £3600 and a 2007 for £4300 which would you buy?
The Toyota dealership are selling a used Yaris 1.8SR for over £10,000, you can buy the same car new in the UK for £9990
Some divot is buying them though.

Comment 9 There Their They’re
Yes the quality of grammar on this forum is appalling, makes you wonder if half these people went to school. Basic stuff too, actually that post looks like spam it appears to have little meaning within the context of the main story.
For those that still don’t get it
There – a place
Their – belonging to them
They’re – abbreviation of they are.

Who was this report written by, the motor trade for the JCRA?
It has been well known for many years the motor trade has a licence to print money, however some motorists choose to buy direct from the manufacture or a UK car dealer saving large amounts of money.
I can buy a Citroen from the UK and get a very good deal with 0% finance, yet I cannot get the same deal in Jersey why? Because the dealer will not give this! Some dealers are rude, uninformative and have little knowledge of the vehicles they are selling, they rely on the fact with live on an island and we will accept this attitude.
Not only are we offered very bad deals on a new car, we are then hit with the very expensive servicing. Often the service is misleading in price and not done to a standard you would expect or have paid for.
My advice to anyone with a wanting a new car, look outside of this island first and if needing it serviced, take it to an independent garage where they can service it with the manufactures genuine parts thus keeping the warranty on the vehicle but at a fraction of the cost of the main dealer – check this with the manufacture of your nice shiny motor.

#9.
Here, here(sic)!!!
(There’s another favourite for you)
well, he did get “they are” right even though the rest of the post was a bad advert for some school somewhere.
I’m still wondering how exactly estate agents come into it, although I do remember one with what might have been a BMW convertible, (not that I’m keen on estate agents or BMW’s). The estate agent I’m thinking of was far from the popular conception of “common”. Quite a gentleman in fact. He will recognise himself if he reads this.

Having been in the motor trade for over 40 years I can say that the excessive new car prices have nothing to do with either delivery charges or dealership running costs in Jersey. New cars are delivered direct from overseas to the UK and main motor manufacturers are more than happy to deliver both in the UK, Ireland and the Isle of Man as part and parcel of the dealership arrangements at an inclusive cost. We in the UK not only have V.A.T and high taxation on our new vehicles and a relatively higher purchase price, servicing and running costs compared to Jersey. The answer to the problem is on of monopoly of the motor trade in Jersey which also extends to all spare parts required. I have myself shipped many vehicles both new and up to 2 years old to colleagues in Jersey at up to 30% savings to the end user. Stop being greedy you main dealers !!!
