JERSEYMAN Peter Gough will lead the Island cricket side in their European Division I Championship debut next month.

The 24-year-old has been named captain ahead of Jersey’s challenge in the top flight of the ICC event, on 13-19 July, in which they have the home advantage as hosts.

Island cricket development officer Gough replaces Ryan Driver as captain, after he announced he was stepping down earlier this month to focus on playing, and hopes to bring his experience at the helm of Rathbone OVs to his new role.

Gough said: ‘I’m really looking forward to the challenge. We have a good mix of older and younger players for the tournament and although we are playing sides we don’t know too much about, I’m confident we will do our best.’

Conratulations to Gough. I follow Jersey cricket team and would like to know if you have to attend/attended university to be picked for the team? and if so is that why P.Connolly has not been picked. As the way he has been playing lately this appears to be the only reason why he would not be picked for the coming tournament. Can I also add that speaking to other cricket watchers I am not the only one who is begining to think selection is a matter of class or who you know.

How on earth do you expect to recuite new talent when it appears that an old boys (school) network exsist whan making selection for tournaments!!!!!

it certainly pays to be an OV – they hold all the positions of power – director of cricket, chairman of selectors, chairman of umpires etc etc
    - draw your own conclusions………

I understand that only 50% of the Selection Panel are OVs. I see from the JEP that the new Island Captain is an OV and he has to be included by virtue of his position as captain. However, the Island Captain up until last month was not an OV – I seem to recall he came from the UK!

Also, apart from the Director of Cricket (who is not a selector), other “positions of power” such as Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary are elected. If people don’t like it, maybe they should nominate themselves for these positions. After all, we live in a democracy and we get the leaders we elect.
