Lifeguard cuts are wrong

From Julia Inns.
I HAVE just read the article concerning the axing of the lifeguards at Havre Des Pas, in order to save costs, by Philip Ozouf.
I cannot believe that he is thinking of such an issue when the pool is used by lots of children and adults of all ages.
Why can’t he change the coloured street light bulbs along the beach and walkway to LED like the ones from St Helier to St Aubin, as this would reduce his budget? If it was his child that the lifeguards saved, I am sure he wouldn’t think twice about these cuts.

I wonder do some parents ever think that maybe the responsibility of their childrens welfare might be down to them and not the State/tax payer?

#1 Probably not, been too spoilt with other people doing it. This’ll make you laugh. Someone on my home island kindly built an indoor pool and allowed the public (their friends) to use it (at their own risk). This was banned by the council because they couldn’t have a lifeguard permanently on duty! So we swim in the sea (no lifeguard there either). Totally illogical. What happened to allowing us to make our own decisions and look after ourselves?
Surely if parents aren’t available then their kids can swim at Aquasplash, if parents are available then they can watch over them at Havre des Pas?

Absolutely – alternatively why don’t a group of ‘concerned parents’ get together and organise amongst themselves a rota of lifeguards. Or better still club together to pay their wages. Never gonna happen.
