A POLICE investigation is under way after a woman was left seriously ill following a fire in her St Helier flat.

The woman was rescued by firefighters after being found on her knees in a smoke-filled room at the property in Liberation Court, St Saviour’s Road, in the early hours of yesterday.

Minutes earlier she had tried to phone the emergency services but was unable to speak because of the smoke. The call was later traced to her flat.

Firefighters broke into the property and took the woman outside. She was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital. The woman, believed to be aged in her 20s, was discharged during the afternoon.
