Timeframe on cuts ‘may be too tight’

Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur.

Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur.

ON the eve of a vote of no confidence in his leadership, Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur has admitted that the timetable for all States departments to make two per cuts could be too ambitious.

However, speaking yesterday ahead of a today’s challenge to his leadership by Deputy Geoff Southern in the States, Senator Terry Le Sueur said that they would just have to get on with it.

The Deputy launched the vote of no confidence in protest against the States cutbacks. As part of the comprehensive spending review, all departments have to make a total of ten per cent savings by 2013 to plug a predicted £50 million deficit.

The Senator was speaking at a Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel yesterday held to review the savings measures. He said that the timeframe for the cuts was probably tighter than he would have liked, but he denied that there was ‘an air of desperation’.

If they got rid of the JDA and Time for Change idiots from the House that would save over £200,000.00 for starters.

Perhaps if they tried a little late working as those of us in the private sector would have to do they might get there!!!!!!

Another episode of time wasting by the Deputy just so he can get to hear his own voice.

How much will this cost the tax payer?

“TLeS has admitted that the timetable for all States departments to make 2% cuts could be too ambitious.”
Call someone in from the real world, Terry and see how things get done.
My Finance Director called us all in and said “From the end of this quarter all your budgets will be cut by 10%. How you do it is down to you but there will be no reduction in service to the customer. Thank you and good afternoon.”
Those managers who achieved it got to keep their jobs a while longer.

Right again Joker. Everytime Southern and his JDA mates don’t like something we get threats of no confidence. The reason they don’t get support (take note Nellie) is not because we’re all establishment, it’s because we don’t like the whinging, malicious and manipulative tone of the JDA. We had loud irritating noises from the JDA long before South Africa invented vuvuzelas…

If the time frame to implement 2% cuts is too short how will they implement 3% cuts next year and 5% cuts the year after?
The States members may have overwhelmingly voted for Terry le Sueur in the no confidence debate but with one eye on the 2011 election will they vote to abolish school milk and more besides?

This very day…they wasted an hour and a half on a subject much to the consternation of jimmy Perchard..who remonstrated with the chair about it…but not very earnestly…chicken..then blow me if they don’t go into a long diatribe on the minutia of heraldry design on red flag ensigns for boats…and whether it was a good idea or should be sanctioned.or what…I nearly threw the radio out the window…why are we paying the best part of 50k a year for these dumbos to postulate such crap is why we are in the Sh** up to our necks..how could the same people take the malfunctioning and overcrowded civil service and shake them into reality when they day dream along with no sense of purpose or urgency..it was embarrassing to listen to and an accurate indicator of the uselessness of the clique.

I will have to print that out and keep it with the other Hansard extracts that I use whenever I feel like I might stand for the States.
The fact is the States need reform to be effective but cannot bring themselves to implement the reforms.
It would be a chicken and egg situation except that the States is a chicken that will never lay the legislative eggs that the island needs :-(

Truthseeker – We pay these idiots £50k to postulate such as they do because all those capable of running the Island properly are earning £200k running very successful businesses. That is why our States members are forced to offer salaries of £250k to employ Civil Servants to do the thinking for them.

Most commentators suggest we offer even less at the next election so if you think things are badly run now they are set to get a lot worse.

Nellie – how do you explain that one? Both the JDA and time for change are against any spending cuts and want to give Civil Servants big pay rises.

If you also take account at the rubbish they spout and the time wasting propositions, three hour plus speeches and the Civil Service time costs in answering their repetitive and often pointless questions the savings would probably be in the millions. Use the part of these savings to offer realistic salaries to entice higher quality candidates and just maybe Jersey will again become a low tax prosperous economy. And if this time it is the people paying the salaries and not businesses as when there was no transparent politicians salary we will all benefit.

Let’s be clear about this. These are not 2% cuts. They are 2% reductions in the previously agreed increases.

according to the IOD public spending has increased by nearly 50% in the last five years – absolutely amazing!

Why not take some bold decisons like the UK government:

Reduce spending apart from health by 25%. Freeze pay of public emoployees for next two years.

11 Sanity..I’d say you have me there….what galls is not so much the salary paid but the calibre of the hired onEG; Ogley was taken on and the spiel was he would save money..not so..all he did was take on more people under him and alleviate his own load…Izatt:- why are we paying 40k a year rent for him and to whom..? I accept he would not be put up in a bedsit and would if any good want appropriate accom…but 40k in rent..?could live at the L’Horizon and waited on hand and foot with change,No it’s the whol;e quango let’s pump it for all it’s worth thing that is flawed…we need to pay more on results produced not smoke and mirrors and a healthy loss..in fact I would be happy to lose us a lot less ,for a lot less.
