Market post office saved?
Thursday 24th June 2010, 2:58PM BST.
MINISTERS will again request Jersey Post to keep the Market post office open, after a proposition was agreed in the States yesterday.
Assistant Treasury Minister John Le Fondré accepted a proposition put by Deputy Paul Le Claire to request the States-owned company to cancel their decision to close the Market sub post office.
Almost 2,000 Islanders have signed a petition arranged by the market traders – who say that the post office keeps people flowing through the market and attracts business.

“the post office keeps people flowing through the market and attracts business”
Perhaps the market traders would like to contribute to the costs of the post office as its enhancing their businesses ?

This clearly in response to Hubeurope wanting to open there, scared of letting in some competition!

Use it or lose it. The public have voted with their feet.

Why should Jersey Post subsidise this post office when they are already saying they need to save money.
Typical States they don’t get how to make cuts to save money themselves now they want to stop the post office making savings.
If it is so important to traders let them put up some money to keep it there!

Thia is similar to when the states told JT to be more commercial and stop wasting money, and cross subsidising. Their response was to attempt to remove the discounted lines senior citizens get (whether they are millionaires or not)and to offer a landline package available to all of around £5 per month.
Some may remember that there was the expected whingeing from Daphne Minihane from Age Concern, and the vote seeking politicians, which forced them to continue to lose £1m per year to subsidise many people who have far more money than people still working. Yes a millionaire senior citizen in Jersey, gets their phone line for under £2 per month. No other telco has a senior citizens rate.
No other utility has to subsidise senseless money losing practices, but JT and JP get shafted by the minority of the public and the states members every time. The reason is they are 100% states ownes, whereas JE, JW and Gas have some or all private investors. Makes you think doesn’t it?
So 2,000 signed a petition? 88,000 didn’t!

This is almost laughable if it wasn’t so patethic. It is obviously not profitable and it is in the middle of town. Please, the Post Offive is only over the road about five minute walk for window shoppers. It reminds me of taking the bus to the Airport which runs a great service and then in red houses it stops every couple of hundred yards. I know this is a small island but the number of bus stops in that area makes me think people living have lost the use of their legs. Again it would be funny if it wasn’t so patethic. It’s time to make cuts where the economics don’t make sense and to think the states are putting pressure to keep it open you get an idea as to why GST has to increase to 5% and twenty means twenty is in the pipes for income tax and income tax relief no longer exists for new life insurance policies?? we are all on the road to nowhere. And despite all the talk of cutting the number of people in the public sectors for at least three years now the numbers keep increasing. Hands off our money.
