Foulbrood: 76 hives destroyed
Friday 25th June 2010, 2:58PM BST.
SEVENTY-six Jersey beehives have been destroyed in the first round of tests following an outbreak of American foulbrood disease.
UK experts tested 426 bee colonies across the Island, with 18 per cent testing positive for the disease, which is highly contagious and kills developing bees in a hive.
Following the tests, 84 of the Island’s beekeepers and representatives from the Environment department attended a meeting at Trinity Parish Hall to discuss the outbreak.
