Jersey’s bionic cat
Friday 25th June 2010, 2:59PM BST.
A CAT in Jersey has become the first moggy in the world to receive pioneering new surgery after its back feet were sliced off by a combine harvester.
Oscar now has two prosthetic paws which were fitted during a three-hour operation carried out by Surrey-based Noel Fitzpatrick, a neuro-orthopaedic veterinary surgeon.
Mr Fitzpatrick drilled holes into the ankle bones of each of the cat’s back legs and inserted metal rods.
These artificial implants were coated with a special substance which encouraged bone cells to grow onto the metal.
