Minister and union welcome Waitrose deal
Friday 25th June 2010, 2:57PM BST.
THE news that Waitrose is to open three supermarkets in Jersey has been generally welcomed.
It was announced yesterday that the company is to buy five large supermarkets in Jersey and Guernsey, from Sandpiper CI, and start trading next year.
The UK group will buy the Checkers stores at Red Houses and Rue des Prés and Safeway in Valleé des Vaux.
The union representing many of the 480 staff currently employed by Sandpiper, and who will be offered jobs by Waitrose, has praised the approach taken by the management of the two companies.
Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean said that he was delighted with the announcement and said that this was evidence that the recently released retail policy had had a positive effect.

Utter rubbish…..This is just a money making exercise from Sandpiper CI which is in thier own interests, not any thing to do with politics….get real Alan!

Lets not forget that Sandpiper as a Jersey company were paying Tax.
But now thanks to this deal Waitrose will not pay a single penny in tax, thanks to the flawed zero-ten tax system.
Not a great day for Jersey Tax Payers.

I wonder if we will still have all the French products now in Checkers

I see the minister referred to a recent retail policy which I haven’t read but in my time on this Island I’m sure all the noise was to attract a third force into the supermarket sector to increase competition. Please tell me that this is not the State’s effort to do that. Fine for the states members and their family I’m sure they can’t wait and the other 5% or thereabouts that can afford it but the idea to introduce competition was perhaps that people would be able to reduce their weekly shopping bill. Waitrose is a great quality brand and by extension a pricey product which I get to enjoy when I find it reduced in Checkers when I am lucky. Checkers thank you for your reductions. As for the coop I have been in their stores fifteen minutes before closing and they are knocking maybe 10-15% of the price – help me out I don’t get it, they would more or less prefer to bin it than offer a serious discount to get it off their shelves and reduce the associated admin involved. And all this from a so called Co-Operative. I don’t get it! REDUCE IT DON’T BIN IT

I wonder—–
Just to rock the boat, they are part of the John Lewis group, that would stir things up if they came as well !!!

I dont think that this has anything to do with the states and the oft suggested idea of a 3rd supermarket. This will be CI Traders cleverly getting round the threat that a “cheap” supermarket would pose to them by sneaking in a company which is as expensive as M&S and as such less of a concern to them than Asda, Lidl or similar would be.
CI Traders sneaking a deal in the back door again – saving their own butts. They are probably betting on the fact that this will be seen by the states as “the” 3rd supermarket and they can now rest easy.
