Six years jail for businessman
Saturday 26th June 2010, 3:00PM BST.
AN Indian businessman who ‘used and abused the Island’s financial systems to steal from a third world country’ has been jailed for six years.
In March Raj Arjandas Bhojwani (53) was found guilty following a six-week trial of laundering US$43.9 million through Jersey bank accounts – the proceeds, the court heard, of corrupt Nigerian vehicle deals.
Yesterday the Royal Court said that his actions deserved a ‘significant’ prison sentence, both as punishment for his crimes and to act as a deterrent to others.
Bhojwani, who was wearing a dark suit, checked shirt and tie in court, did not react as the sentence was announced by Commissioner Julian Clyde-Smith.
