IN the most exciting schools athletics inter-insular this century Jersey retained the overall trophy at Foote’s Lane last Thursday by 288 points to 259.

Without the efforts of the under-14 girls, however, who won their trophy by 77 points to 49, the trophy could well have stayed in Guernsey as the U14 boys lost 73-75; the U15 boys lost 73-74 and, although they won, the U15 girls did so narrowly, by four points, 65-61.

‘Apart from the U14 girls it really was a nail-biting day,’ said Denise Montgomery, secretary of the Jersey Schools’ (athletics) section.

‘But the children behaved impeccably and all of the Island’s secondary schools had an equal amount of athletes in the party of 56 we took over. Only one girl and four boys were unable to go.’
