SALLY HALL will join thousands of fundraisers tomorrow when she dives into the Thames in London for a charity swim.

The 50-year-old, who was educated at Beaulieu and St Helier Girls and now lives in the UK, is hoping to raise £1,000 for the Wessex Cancer Trust by completing the one-mile course at Victoria Docks.

She is the chief executive of the Southampton-based charity, which works closely with cancer patients and their families in the Island.

About 5,000 people are expected to take part in the British Gas Great London Swim.

‘The charity takes in Jersey and the other Channel Islands,’ Sally explained. ‘We have quite a few patients coming over from Jersey and I would like that to continue. We provide patient transport grants, information leaflets and holiday homes for people who need respite.

One of the most important things we do is train Island nurses in Southampton to administer treatment locally so that, for example, children can have their treatment closer to home. That is the sort of thing that I am raising money for.’

Sally also has a highly personal reason for wanting to support the charity, because her father and husband both died of cancer. She added: ‘This is a challenge for me. I do swim, but I have done nothing like this before.’
