Marathon effort to help stroke sufferers
Tuesday 6th July 2010, 2:58PM BST.
FORMER JEP assistant editor Anthony Lewis, who suffered a massive stroke two years ago, is training to complete the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon for charity.
Anthony, who was left disabled and with severe aphasia after the stroke, is aiming to walk the entire 26-mile course over a week ending on the day of the Jersey Marathon, Sunday 3 October.
He is hoping that his efforts will raise £5,000 for the Stroke Association in Jersey to assist other people in the Island with the condition.
Anthony suffered a stroke in November 2007 as the result of a freak football accident which left him with the loss of all use of the right side of his body.
Initially confined to a wheelchair during a five-month stay in the rehabilitation unit at Overdale, he worked hard to learn to walk again, first with a walking frame, then with a stick before being able to walk unaided.

Good luck Anthony, I wish you well.
Over the years I have met several stroke patients who never smiled, never attempted much and some even though the world owed them something, however, several weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting an English lady who was staying in Gorey with her husband. She had suffered a severe stroke several years ago and was determined not to let it defeat her, she gets on with life as normal as possible, she drives an adapted motability car, walks albeit it slowly when she can and has a constant smile on her face I chatted to her on several ocassions. She was remarkable and Anthony seems to have that positive attitude too.
