Scally DanDan headlines Club Kamikaze’s Dubstep vs Punk night at the Live Lounge on Friday, alongside Jersey favourites Marvel
LONDON maestro Scally DanDan has a growing reputation as one of the Big Smoke’s finest and most exciting new DJs.
A true genre-twister, he’ll tackle anything from dubstep, fidget, bassline, electro, grime, garage, D&B, old skool rave and acid house to less mainstream styles like Kuduro and Baile-funk – and he’s fast become known to London’s ravers with a residency at super-cool celeb hang-out Punk.
From live sets and massively acclaimed gigs at club nights like Together (which has recently featured the likes of Miss Dynamite, Skream and Tinie Tempah) and the infamous Nuke Them All nights, Scally DanDan has become something of an internet phenomenon too, with a weekly dubstep/fidget podcast attracting hundreds of thousands of subscribers and regularly entering the iTunes charts.
How long have you been DJing for? How would you sum up your style?
‘I started DJing by accident in 2007. I always have a bit of a hard time trying to describe what I play as it’s so all over the place, my style is pretty bass-heavy banging, electronic, thumping bass lines, unusual rhythms, urban, cut up vocals, exotic, music that stimulates your feet and the grey matter simultaneously – I hope.’
What can the Jersey audience expect from your set?
‘A mélange! Even then I sounded a little bit pretentious! I try and play what feels right at the time and trust my intuition, so it all depends on the crowd and what they’re feeling on the night.’
Who or what are your musical heroes and influences?
‘I know it sounds a bit corny, but I’ve never really been what you’d call a “fan” of anyone. I like music that reflects the here and now, so whatever is on my mp3 player at any moment, which right now is mainly B-more, music from Lagos and Burundi, Japanese demon drummers, Balinese Gamelan and K-2 from Bristol.’
What three words sum up what you know about Jersey?
‘Food purity laws.’
Ultimate musical ambition?
‘It changes every week, but at the moment it would be to pull! Because I’m a DJ it’s come close but not actually amounted to more than a snog. And that gave me tonsillitis, so it was a bit of an own goal.’
What’s the greatest gig you’ve played?
‘I’ve played loads that I’ve thought were awesome, but I would say my favourite in the past year was Together season at Coronet in London. I’d say currently it’s the ‘Your Mum’s House’ club night because the crowd are so great, messy and up for fun and new stuff.’
What’s the weirdest gig you’ve played?
‘I played at a squat party a couple of years back because ironically I needed the money as my rent was late, and literally fell through the floor. That was quite weird. I was only grazed and just carried on, I was crying inside, though.’
What’s the first record you bought?
‘Betty Boo’s Doin’ the Doo.’
What’s your guilty musical secret?
‘Mrs Miller. Shhh!’
What’s your favourite place in the world?
‘Reykjavik. When I’m super-rich I’m living there, if Eyjafjallajökull doesn’t wipe it out first.’
Best hangover cure?
‘I can only drink when I’m not working now or on holiday. I’m surrounded by free alcohol all the time with my job, which is quite dangerous, especially when you spend 90 per cent of your life hanging around clubs. So as for hangover cures – not drinking, maybe? Failing that I recommend milk thistle tincture in a glass of warm tap water before bed and the morning after. Takes the edge off. But once alcohol is in your system only time will get rid of it.’
Who’s going to win on Friday night – dubstep or punk?
‘I like both so I’m happy whatever the outcome, and I’m not really sure how you would determine a winner, as appreciation of dubstep is quite difficult to gauge as it tends to be quite chin-stroky and jerky dancing. I met Poly Styrene (70s punk band X Ray Spex’s singer) – she’s a bit nuts and makes meditation music now. So I reckon punk’s had its biggest loss right there.’
