Can Jersey work with Guernsey?

Saturday 10th July 2010, 3:00PM BST.

This week columnist Christine Herbert considers that age-old topic of Jersey working more closely with Guernsey.

It follows  the news that Jersey and Guernsey are going to share a competition regulator in future.

‘Just think how much money the States could have saved if they had gone down the joint Channel Islands competition regulatory route in the first place,’ she says.

‘Not to mention the mini-scandal, of course – the one where the executive director and friends took themselves off on little jaunts at the taxpayers’ expense, along with long lunches and so on, without properly accounting for their activities. I know it was a few years ago, but it still rankles with some of us.

‘At any rate, let’s hope that this new bloke keeps an eye on the purse strings, and has the ability to knock more than a few heads together. Otherwise it is not inconceivable that we may lose our post offices altogether.’
