Assembly needs an injection of reality
Tuesday 13th July 2010, 3:00PM BST.
From Richard Pullen.
What utter madness is this?
The States Treasurer is currently replaced by a temporary stand-in, who since February this year has been tasked to assist the Minister to save money and during this same time, we as tax payers are reportedly coughing up over a £1,000 a day for him to do it.
We are also apparently subsidising his hotel choice by means of an additional subsistence allowance every day to the tune of £90. If that stated cost is correct, since February he alone has cost us all approximately £159,000 for his services, with no obvious end in sight.
In the light of this breathtaking revelation of financial profligacy by our States departments, how the Minister for Home affairs Ian Le Marquand can have the unmitigated gall to criticise the entry level pay of a police Constable, is beyond any sort of reason.
I’m fairly sure Mr Warcup as acting Chief Officer of Police would have welcomed Mr Carvel-Groves cost to the States to have been added to his budget, as he could have reduced his under manning problems to the tune of four extra officers and still given money back to the Treasury.
Somehow the States Assembly needs an injection of reality as its financial acumen is severely suspect and its cavalier attitude and apparent lack of sensitivity to the feelings of the Island electorate in these times of financial constraint is truly appalling.
