Does his or her head roll or just another shrug of the shoulders?

Wednesday 14th July 2010, 3:00PM BST.

From Donald McGregor.
Frankly the dreadful quality of much of the Island government is totally unacceptable or should be.

The Treasury Minister admits (JEP, 10 Jul) one of his predecessors, ie who became Chief Minister, appointed a States Treasurer who was not up to the job. On whose references did the then Treasury Minister rely? Some of us would probably know the answer.

Jersey pays its senior civil servants wonderful salaries, one assumes on the understanding that their choice was fully qualified and experienced to handle all the problems they might come across in a Jersey of 100,000 souls. Not a London of 10,000,000 souls.

We could understand very unusual engineering or scientific problems requiring extremely specialist knowledge but financial dealings are not in that category, are they, Treasury Minister? I mean converting £s to Euros should be well within the capability of one’s department.

There is a long history of quite serious criticism of the Treasury, the Minister is quoted as asking ‘Who has been in charge for the past few years?’ Does his or her head roll or just another shrug of the shoulders?

Don’t mention the crazy suspensions because we will not be told who is responsible for this fiasco. Just pay up!

One of the greatest ironies of the affairs at Treasury is that both Terry le Sueur and Phillip Ozouf, the past and present Treasury Ministers, are both qualified accountants running a hugely expensive crew of supposedly crack bean counters.

    1. Pip Clement – Is your first statement factually correct or just what we have been led to believe? One does not have to be a qualified accountant to be employed by an accountancy firm.

    I’m just asking the question.

As far as I know Terry le Sueur has a first from Oxford in physics, he taught at De La Salle for a while but then trained as an accountant and qualified as an ACA or chartered accountant, I would guess he is an FCA by now.
Phillip Ozouf has a BA (Hons) International Business and French Equivalent from the European Business School and holds a diploma from CIMA, the cost and management accounting people.
Ian Gorst is also an accountant, I think he is still practising part time.
So with plenty of bean counters in the top echelons it is not a surprise that we are heading for a huge deficit!
