Flybe’s bonjour to Air France
Wednesday 14th July 2010, 3:00PM BST.
FLYBE has signed a deal with Air France that should mean the airline founded by the late Jersey resident Jack Walker will carry more French passengers each year.
The two airlines have announced plans to sell each other’s routes under a ‘codeshare’ agreement.
Air France will sell Flybe’s 45 routes from France to the UK and Flybe will sell Air France’s five routes between the UK and France, as well as seven domestic French routes and 11 international connections.

This is what happened with BMI and Lufthansa so this will probably lead to Flybe being sold off to Air France.
Business is business.

Flymo, the conditions under which BMI was sold to Lufthansa were very different. They were already codesharing as part of the Star Alliance and an historic agreement between the ex-chairman of BMI and Lufthansa allowed him to exersise a clause forcing Lufthansa to purchase BMI. It wasn’t the German airline’s choice. Furthermore BMI were on the brink of collapse whilst flybe is profitable.
This seems like a mutually beneficial deal. Unlike BA, Air France has a reasonably substantial domestic network whilst flybe’s business model is focussed on offering point to point regional services. The only issue I see is how a full service airline and a no-frills (not low-cost because, come on it’s flybe!) can offer through tickets considering the different levels of on-board service and extra charges from flybe.

This isn’t the first time they’ve code shared with Air France, they even used to have some of their aircraft in Air France colours, it will only be useful if they do more Paris flights…
